James C Peterson, DVM
Practice Owner, Veterinarian
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Dr. Jim Peterson grew up in Fairfax, Virginia. He received a BS in Biology from Virginia Tech. in 1976, a BS in Animal and Poultry Sciences from Tuskegee University in 1977 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Tuskegee University in 1979. Dr. Jim assumed ownership of the Highway Veterinary Hospital in July 1981, after working with the previous owner for just 6 months.
Since then, he has completely transformed the animal hospital from the “little house in the woods” to the state of the art facility that you see today. Dr. Jim is credited with the hospital’s design and homey atmosphere that you experience at Highway today. He loves the challenge of a small construction project. In fact, it is not unusual to see him hammering, sanding or painting during a current renovation. Truth be told, the tranquil koi pond that greets clients upon their arrival was designed and built by him. Dr. Jim’s vision has always been to have the best animal hospital in the area, providing the highest quality compassionate veterinary care, with unsurpassed client communication services, in a comfortable and homey atmosphere, surrounded by a remarkably talented health care team, all the while continuously exceeding his clients’ expectations. He believes that he has accomplished all of this at Highway Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Jim’s areas of interest in veterinary medicine include soft tissue surgery, dental care, pocket pets and placing a strong focus on the client service aspect of the field. Dr. Jim can often be found ‘catching up’ with a client in the exam room, long after the medicine has been discussed.
Dr. Jim shares a home with his wife, Chris, the hospital director at Highway Veterinary Hospital, and their daughter, Alex. They currently share their home with a Giant Schnauzer named Maxy, a Pomachon named Belle, and a German Warmblood horse named Captain Crunch.
